Olive Oil For Hair: Your Ultimate Guide

Olive Oil For Hair: Your Ultimate Guide

Olive oil is a true superfood. It's rich in antioxidants and healthy unsaturated fats. It tastes delicious in a variety of recipes. It has even been linked to lower risk of stroke and other cardiovascular problems! But did you know there are also multiple benefits of using olive oil for hair? It can make your locks smoother, shinier, and even longer! Yes, hidden in this article you will find my secret method of growing my hair fast! Read on to learn that and much more!

Using Olive Oil As A Conditioner?

Most women use anywhere between five to eight beauty products on a daily basis. I know I use a lot more than that. But did you know that commercial cosmetics can contain harmful chemicals? Some of the ingredients in these products can even cause cancer! Of course, no cosmetics company is actively trying to poison you. The hazardous ingredients exist in very small quantities. The catch is that you never know exactly how much of them you're inhaling or absorbing through your skin when you use multiple commercial products. That's why more and more people are looking into natural product replacements. And boy is olive oil for hair conditioning a great option!

Reverse Conditioning

Unless you have something really gross in your hair (like mud), it's actually better to condition before you shampoo. This way the conditioner will protect your hair from the shampoo stripping its' natural oils. You will still get clean hair but it will be more moisturized and healthy in the long run. Olive oil for hair conditioning should only be used before the shampoo.  Measure out a few tablespoons of olive oil and massage them into your hair. Start with the ends and work your way up into the roots. This technique ensures the driest part of your hair gets the most of the moisture. Then massage the oil for as long as you wish. The longer, the better. If you have a couple of minutes, put your hair in a plastic cap and leave the olive oil while you shave, exfoliate, and wash your body. I also really like doing this when I'm taking a long bath. The heat from the bath will help the conditioning sink in. Make sure you wash thoroughly after applying the oil.  Watch out for the back part of your hair especially. If you forget a section, it will look like an oily mess for the rest of the day.

Olive Oil For Hair Growth

Growing your hair out can be a frustrating process. For a lot of people, it grows until it reaches their neck/shoulders and then it kind of goes 'Oh, that is enough' and it stops. It's ridiculous but it does happen. There are two main ways to solve your hair growth woes:
  1. Nutrition
  2. Local treatment

Fortunately, olive oil can help with both of those.

Feed Your Hair For Growth

If you eat well, it shows all over your body. That shouldn't be that much of a surprise. Provide your system with quality building blocks and every part of your body will start to look better. Olive oil is one of the healthiest fat sources out there. Of course, we are talking pure extra virgin olive oil here. The oils that are extracted with chemicals and high heat lose their health benefits. They could even contain harmful chemicals! Including olive oil as a part of a healthy diet can definitely help you glow up. It's loaded with antioxidants that prevent oxidative damage to your body. Since oxidative stress is especially visible in our hair growth (and also our skin quality), olive oil will improve that plus it will make you glow from the inside. Who doesn't want that?

The Real Secret To Hair Growth

OK, so changing up your diet and including plenty of good nutrients is the long-term way to inner beauty. But what about something more immediate? Well, I do have a treat for you: The Inversion Method! The inversion method is a technique that increases blood flow to your scalp. This way, your hair follicles get more oxygen and nutrients with the blood and they can literally work faster and better. With the inversion method, you can more than double your hair growth. Women have seen almost magical results - up to 3-4 inches in a single week! And the technique has been around for centuries. It makes you wonder why your hair stylist never told you about it.

How To Do The Inversion Method With Olive Oil

For this method, you only need a high-quality oil of choice and 15 to 20 minutes of your time. I enjoy using olive oil because of the additional benefits of olive oil for hair. It softens and moisturizes my locks plus I can be completely sure that it's natural and contains no harmful ingredients.
  1. Optional: warm up the oil - There isn't consensus on this one. Heat up the olive oil too much and you will destroy some of the nutrients (or even burn yourself). But warm oil does increase the blood flow. It's advisable that you throw the oil in the microwave for ten to twenty seconds.
  2. Apply the oil to your scalp - You will need to apply the oil directly to your scalp first. Rub it between your palms to keep it warm and then gently massage it into your roots.
  3. Tip your head upside down - No need to go into complete inversion. Just tipping your head over the sink or the bathtub is enough.
  4. Comb your hair to the front - This will be fairly easy because of the oil. It prevents knots from forming and it's an additional form of massage.
  5. Massage your scalp - Gently start kneading your skin with the tips of your fingers. As you get more and more comfortable with the touch, you can start going a bit harder. Don't be afraid to go in with the palms of your hands as well.
  6. Keep going for 4-5 minutes - I like to massage my hair all throughout the inversion period. Some women aren't too comfortable doing that and they prefer to just sit with their hair inversed and relax. Both of these are fine, although if you keep massaging you will bring even more blood into your scalp area.

After you complete that, wash your hair as usual. By doing it every night for a week you will start seeing a visible improvement. In fact, measure your hair length before you give the method a go. This way you can be 100% certain of the progress!

Fight Split Ends

Split ends happen to the best of us. You go on vacation, you miss a few visits to the hairdresser, or... well, you simply get them because that is how your hair is. But did you know you can use olive oil to repair split ends on your hair? For a visible improvement of your rough and brittle hair texture, just rub some olive oil between the palms of your hands and distribute it all over the ends. This is particularly useful if you had your hair in layers and now the split ends are ruining the look. Take it up a notch by mixing together a couple tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and sweet almond oil together. The sweet almond oil will bring Omega 6 & 9, Iron, Calcium, Magnesium and vitamin K into the mix. It provides additional hair benefits. Heat the mixture for a few seconds in the microwave (don't go over 20 seconds though). Now apply it generously over your split ends and wrap your hair in a warm towel. I like to put a plastic shower cap over the towel but some women even use aluminium foil. The point is trapping the moisture for as long as possible. Leave the mask on while you are watching your favourite show or doing chores around the house. The longer, the better. Personally, I can't stand it for more than an hour. It really begins to bother me. But if you are a bit more patient than me, you will reap even more hair benefits.

Olive Oil For Hair Dandruff

Ah, the dreaded white flakes! Dandruff can either be the result of a dry scalp or have a fungal cause. If it's fungi, do not use olive oil. You will only give the little suckers extra nutrients. If, however, your dandruff is not constant but it comes up when you are stressed or at winter when your scalp is drier: Olive oil to the rescue! For best results, mix together equal parts olive oil, lemon juice, and water. The acidic lemon juice will chemically exfoliate your scalp. This gently removes the flakes and the dry skin. Then, the olive oil will moisturize and rejuvenate the skin that comes underneath. Oh, and the water is there to dilute the lemon juice. The acid can be really harsh on your skin if you apply it directly. Leave the concoction on for 20 minutes and your scalp should be completely dandruff-free!
